Marriage allowance

Marriage allowance

Are you married?…..Should you apply for marriage allowance?

What is marriage allowance?

Marriage allowance is the transfer of 10% of your tax free personal allowance to your spouse.

The marriage allowance is £1,260 for 2024–25 and 2023–24.

Why should I apply?

When one of the couple does not utilise their full personal allowance or has income taxable at 0% and the other member of the couple has fully utilised their personal allowance and are paying tax.

This means the ‘marriage allowance’ is potentially worth £252 (£1,260 × 20%), though it cannot be given as a repayment of tax.

Who can apply?

Anyone who has a spouse or civil partner can apply and neither is a higher or additional rate taxpayer.

When can I apply?

The transferor spouse or civil partner must apply within four years of the end of the tax year concerned. For 2024–25 you will therefore need to apply no later than 5 April 2029.
